Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker as a little girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. After only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. When she was in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. In Boston, where she worked during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day, was an usherette. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
